Artificial Insemination

Artificial Insemination (AI) can be performed three different ways: vaginal insemination, transcervical insemination, and surgical implant. We offer only vaginal insemination. The other techniques can be performed at local veterinarians. Success of pregnancy with each technique varies.

Vaginal insemination is where the sperm collected from the sire is placed in the vaginal vault, right at the rim of the cervix. This is most similar to a natural breeding.

Best Time to Breed

There's a relatively small window when your dog is most fertile during the heat cycle; it may begin about seven to ten days after she goes into heat (starts bleeding) and lasts about five days. However, she can become pregnant until the end of the cycle.

Knowing when to breed requires knowledge of the estrus cycle.

The cycle begins with a rise in estrogen. Just before LH rises to a peak, progesterone begins its rise. Following the rise in progesterone will indicate the best time to breed. Typically, dames ovulate about two days after LH peak and it takes about two days for the ovulated eggs to mature so that sperm can fertilize these eggs. The fertile period in a dame’s cycle is 4–7 days from LH peak.

All dames are different and each cycle can be different. We offer services for testing hormonal peaks or fertile periods at additional cost. Many local veterinarians also offer these services.

Pricing

The cost is $100 per visit. It is recommended to consider having AI performed 2-3 times on a once daily basis at the time of the peak fertile period. This will increase success of pregnancy and number in the litter. Payment is due at time of each visit. We do not guarantee success. No refunds.

How does this work?

We will perform AI at the location of Schmidt Doodles in Holmen, WI. Schmidt Doodles is owned and operated by Jeannie Schmidt. She and I will perform the AI services. You will need to bring the dame and sire to the location at the same time. We will coordinate this with you when the time is right for the dame. If you need assistance finding a sire, we will be happy to help.

The process from start to finish takes approximately 30 minutes. You are welcome to stay or leave for that short time. We ask that if you leave, to please return within 45-60 minutes of dropping off the dog(s). Additional charges will be billed for time beyond 60 minutes.

We will have an AI contract for you to complete and sign for liability reasons. This will be completed and provided to us before or at the time of AI services.
